JACKSON STATE DOMINATES SOUTH CAROLINA STATE IN POST-PRIME DEBUT

The Coach Prime era is over in Jackson Mississippi. But that doesn’t mean the foundation he helped build there won’t produce winning football, or that JSU won’t continue to be one of the marquee names in all of college football. Saturday night’s dominating 37-7 win over the South Carolina State Bulldogs in the MEAC/SWAC Challenge in Atlanta went a long way toward proving that, while also proving the Tigers could do a thing or two that Coach Prime’s teams couldn’t.
The Tigers are quite familiar with teams from the MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference). Unfortunately, they weren’t familiar with beating them. Despite producing a 23-3 record the last two seasons Jackson State was unable to defeat a team from the MEAC and win the Celebration Bowl in either season. Last season it was a loss to North Carolina Central. In 2021 it was a 31-10 loss to South Carolina State, the last time the teams met before Saturday night.
There’s no doubt revenge could have played a huge factor in how soundly the Tigers beat the Bulldogs. New head coach T.C. Taylor certainly had his team ready to play. All offseason the questions surrounding the departure of Deion Sanders and the really good players who left the team placed a lot of doubt on how good the Tigers could be going forward. The two-time defending SWAC champions had something to prove and they did just that.
Oh, by the way….
Speaking of the players who left the team. Probably the biggest question surrounding the players was who would replace Shedeur Sanders at QB. The two-time FCS Offensive Player of the Year decided to join his Dad at Colorado, obviously leaving a huge void. After a lenghty battle for the QB1 position Virginia Tech transfer Jason Brown finally won the job.
He seems to be the right choice.
Brown completed 26 of his 33 passes for 361 yards and 3 TD’s. The touchdowns went to three different receivers. A 35-yard pass to tight end Jency Riley, a 21-yard pass to tight end DJ Stevens, and 44-yarder to Andre Hunt. Brown’s stat line earned him MVP honors.
JSU also did a lot of damage on the ground, led by Irv Mulligan’s 109 yards rushing. It was Mulligan’s 46-yard run that got the scoring started in the first quarter. The Tigers finished with 499 yards of total offense.
For the Bulldogs it was a frustrating night where they looked totally outmatched all night. Their only score of the night came late in the 4th quarter with a 22-yard pass from QB Corey Fields Jr. to KeShawn Toney.
It was annouced earlier in the week that legendary head coach ‘Buddy’ Pough would retire at the end of the season. The loss to Jackson State was quite humiliating for South Carolina State who’s coming off an uncharateristically bad 3-8 record in 2022. Pough’s record (146-87 overall, 112-42 MEAC) over his 22 years as the Bulldogs head coach is totally the opposite of what his team produced last season.
Both teams are back in action next weekend. SCSU plays at Charlotte. Meanwhile, Jackson State gets ready for a huge showdown in the Orange Blossom Classic against SWAC Eastern division contender Florida A&M. That pivotal matchup takes place on Sunday.

GRIZZLIES, GRITTY & ‘SMART’

Grizzlies acquire Celtics guard Marcus Smart in blockbuster deal. The Memphis Grizzlies traded away their only first round pick in Thursday’s 2023 NBA Draft.
What a trade it was……
It was a trade that looks to only enhance the well deserved label of ‘Gritty’ that’s often used to describe the Memphis Grizzlies over the years.
If there was ever a player who could be described as ‘Gritty’ or a player who seems to fit an organization like a glove, that player is Marcus Smart for the Memphis Grizzlies. It just makes too much sense, and looks extremely ‘Smart’ to bring in a guy that displays the Grit and Grind the Grizzlies. Pun intended.
In this, Episode 47, of THE BALL ABOUT THE SOUTH PODCAST with CWood, we examine this huge 3-team deal between the Grizzlies, Boston Celtics, and Washington Wizards. This was the second blockbuster deal of the week for the Wizards, who earlier in the week traded Bradley Beal to the Phoenix Suns for Chris Paul (who later was traded to Golden State) Landry Shamet and picks.
After discussing these trades, we’ll take a quick look at the 2023 NBA Draft. Also, on tap, is the exciting 2024 football schedule, which is highlighted by Georgia at Alabama and huge games featuring the Oklahoma Sooners and Texas Longhorns. 2024 promises to be a season of SEC football. This also promises to be an episode BALL ABOUT THE SOUTH with CWood you don’t want to miss!

HORNETS vs HAWKS, LAMELO vs TRAE, NBA PLAY-IN PREVIEW

While the debate for who’s the better young lead guard, the Hornets’ Lamelo Ball or the Hawks’ Trae Young wll be better determined in the future, the debate for who’s the best team right now, Charlotte Hornets or Atlanta Hawks, will be determined Wednesday night at State Farm Arena in Atlanta. This episode of this budding rivalry, Hornets vs Hawks – Lamelo vs Trae – will determine who keeps their season alive one more game for a chance to make the 2022 NBA Playoffs.
The rivalry between these two young teams doesn’t teams doesn’t get the hype the rivalry between these two young stars does, however that’s about to change and that begins with this huge Eastern Conference 9 vs 10 matchup.
In actuality, it wasn’t expected that either team would be in this position. Atlanta, who was coming off an Eastern Conference Finals appearance, was looked at as team that would safely make it into the playoffs without needing the Play-in round. Charlotte, on the other hand, was looked at as a team that might not have made the top 10 of the conference. Neither of these narratives were exactly true, for one reason or another, so here we are. So, who has the advantage in this huge matchup?
SEASON SERIES – HORNETS vs HAWKS
If the season series is any indication, we’re looking at this ending in a tie. Ok. Well, maybe it goes to Overtime. Both teams finished the regular season 43-39, and the season series is tied 2-2 with each team winning once on the other’s home floor. Biggest margin of victory was the 22-point victory (113-91) in January by the Hawks, in Charlotte. The other three matchups were much closer, which would be expected from two pretty evenly matched squads.
One key stat is, the 43 wins by Charlotte is the most by a team finishing 10th in the Eastern Conference in 23 years.
HORNETS KEYS TO VICTORY
Charlotte is a team that loves to get up and down the floor and score a lot of points. The transition game is where Ball is the most dangerous. That’s a great thing when you consider the Hawk’s weakness is their defense. However, in a slower paced game, the Hawks would be probably be in a much better position to slow down the Hornets. Hawks’ big-man Clint Capela is a capable rim protector and rebounder. If the Hornets are out of their comfort zone in a grind it out game the Hawks could have a clear advantage.
A faster pace suits players like leading scorer Miles Bridges (20.2 ppg, 7 rebs), who is an undersized big who might enjoy a little more success out on the perimeter.
However, the biggest key is Ball (20.1 ppg, 7.6 assists). At this stage of his career, he’s a much better player in transition. This helps him make all those spectacular plays and get the ball to guys like Terry Rozier (19.3 ppg, 4.5 assists), an Kelly Oubre Jr. (15 ppg). However, the Hornets will be without Gordon Hayward, who is nursing an ankle injury.
HAWKS KEYS TO VICTORY
While tthe Hawks could probably benefit from a slower paced game vs the Hornets, they’re not a a slow down team and have plenty of offensive weapons of their own. Everything begins with Young (28.4 ppg, 9.7 assists) and his insane shooting ability that has him compared to Steph Curry. However, this season and last he’s showcased just how good a passers he is. He has guys to get the ball to, like Bogdan Bogdanovich (15.1 ppg), and Danilo Gallinari (11.7 ppg). but he doesn’t have quite the number of weapons Ball does. Like much of the regular season, the Hawks are dealing with injuries. John Collins, the Hawks’ versatile big-man is one example. He won’t be available until the playoffs, if the Hawks make it.
Again, defense is where the Hawks struggle. The Hawks rank 21st in the NBA this season giving up 112 points per game. However, the Hornets are worse at 25th in the NBA giving up nearly 115 per game. So, the opportunities will be there offensively.
LAMELO vs TRAE….. PREDICTION
In a lot of ways Atlanta’s season has been quite disappointing, but a lot of that is due to injury. The one constant has been Trae Young, who’s showing exactly why he was an All Star and will be for years to come. The same can be said for Lamelo Ball.
Going forward Ball has more upside than Young, mainly due to his size and his better than expected perimeter shot. Right now, the Hawks have the advantage over the Hornets because of their home court advantage. However, there’s no doubt the Hornets are than capable of winning a game in the road, especially when a lot more of the pressure to win will be on the team wearing Red & Yellow. Expect a tight game at State Farm Arena. The winner gets a trip to Cleveland to play the Cavaliers on Friday night, for a chance to be the 8th seed and face the top seeded Miami in the first round.

GOOD OUTWEIGHS BAD FOR OLE MISS AFTER SUGAR BOWL LOSS TO BAYLOR

On a night when a team loses it’s biggest bowl game in years, in somewhat embarrassing fashion, you would imagine the aftermath of such a loss would very deflating. Don’t misunderstand, losing 21-7 to Baylor in the Allstate Sugar Bowl, and in the process seeing star quarterback Matt Corral go down to injury, is very depressing. However, when assessing the Rebels’ 2021 season and anticipating the future, there’s more good than bad in Oxford Mississippi.
First, the bad.
Losing Matt Corral to injury, early in the game, certainly set the tone and put Ole Miss at a huge disadvantage. Baylor’s defense was already going to be a bear (pun intended) to tame even with the SEC’s All Conference 2nd team QB. Without Corral head coach Lane Kiffin was forced to go with true freshman QB Luke Altmyer. Obviously, the results weren’t good. Corral was sacked twice before leaving the game and Altmyer was sacked seven times, for a total of nine. Altmyer also threw two interceptions in addition to Corral’s one.
It certainly wasn’t a good night at the Superdome in New Orleans. The worst part, however, was Matt Corral’s injury. Thankfully, it’s diagnosed as being just a sprained ankle. That’s excellent news for the soon-to-be NFL Draft pick, who could land somewhere as high as the first round.
It wasn’t the best of nights for the large contingent of Ole Miss fans, but the loss to Baylor and Corral’s injury should not damper their spirit.
Now, the good……
The Rebels, despite the loss, were still competitive with the Bears. Baylor, Big 12 champs and the number seven team in the nation going into the Sugar Bowl, is a really good team. Head coach Dave Aranda, who has SEC coaching experience as defensive coordinator with LSU, is doing a magnificent job building his program. The Bears look like a true contender going forward and Ole Miss still was able to hang with them. Baylor did next to nothing offensively and that’s credit to an Ole Miss defense that’s improved mightily all season.
Very rarely have the Rebels been adequate defensively. Even though they still have a long way to go, that’s starting to change. We already know Lane Kiffin will have the offense be explosive as ever, and that’s despite losing offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby. The foundation has been set, and for once, it’s seemingly on both sides of the ball.
Recruiting is only getting better. It’s a safe bet Kiffin will find his next star QB on the recruiting trail or in the transfer portal. Also, Altmyer, despite having the rough game overall, showed flashes.
Then, when looking back at the regular season, the Rebels showed signs of a team that’s simply learning how to win. For example, take a look at the Texas A&M. Close game throughout, but it was Ole Miss not the favored Aggies that made the winning plays to win the game. There’s still work to be done, but games like that usually ended in an Ole Miss loss.
So, while it wasn’t a good look for Ole Miss in the Sugar Bowl on New Year’s night, the future is definitely bright. A program that’s had to suffer through a lot over the years can finally take solace that the good is starting to outweigh the bad.

Grading Graham Mertz in Gators mistake filled loss to Utah

After beating the Utah Utes in last season’s opening game things went south really quick for the Florida Gators. They would go on to win only five more games and end the season with a losing 6-7 record. It was the second consecutive 6-7 season. Losing seasons just don’t happen often in Gainesville.
With two consecutive losing seasons under their belt, a second-year head coach in Billy Napier, and new transfer quarterback Graham Mertz trying to adapt to his new team, it’s quite obvious the Gators have a lot to prove this season. However, the only thing proven in the Gators 24-11 loss to the Utah Utes is they still make too many costly mistakes and they’re still quite undisciplined.
Let’s be clear. The Gators were probably fortunate the score was this close. Utes starting QB Cam Rising had to sit out the game due to injury. Utah had it’s own issues offensively most of the night. Obviously, some of that was due to not having their experienced QB, who’s one of the best in a PAC-12 that’s stacked with really good QB play.
One area of concern for the Gators this season is their own quarterback position. Mertz in his first game as starter, however, would leave more questions than answers.
Mertz finished the game with a stat line that looks pretty good. He finished the game 31 of 44 for 333 yards and a TD. His 137 passer rating looked good, also. But it was the five sacks and lack of converting 3rd downs that ultimately caught up with him. He also had one interception.
The overall stats tell one story. Other factors tell another. The five sacks were a huge problem. Converting only 1 of 13 third down conversions hurt big time.
Of course, it wasn’t all Mertz’ fault. Lots of the ill-timed penalties created longer conversions for third downs. There were also several plays where his receivers let him down with drops or not being on the same page with their routes. Some of that should be cleaned up over time as the receivers get more acquainted with Mertz in game situations.
One critique of Mertz’ play Thursday night was his lack of throwing the ball down field. It seemed every pass was the dink and dunk variety. There was little to nothing that stretched the field or seemingly tested Utah’s secondary. Ricky Pearsall, the Gators’ top returning receiver made plays after the catch. Pearsall hauled in 8 receptions for 92 yards. His longest reception was 40 yards. But it was a short pass where he broke loose into the Utes secondary and scampered down the left sideline.
Florida’s running game was stuck in neutral, also. Gaining only 13 yards on the ground isn’t going to cut it against many teams. It certainly won’t cut it on the road against a team that’s won two straight PAC-12 titles and is a serious threat to win a third.
While the stat line for Mertz looked solid. His grade has to be incomplete, at best, in this game vs Utah.
Head coach Billy Napier has a tough job on his hands to get this Florida program where the fans thirst for them to be, and where they haven’t been in a long time. A lot of that turnaround has to be cutting down on the mistakes and playing disciplined football. Another huge part will be getting the QB and the offense on the right page.
